Fibre-Lyte Overview
Optoelectronic Packaging for Datacom
Fiber-Lyte is the world's smallest integrated transceiver package. It houses VCSELs, photodetectors, lenses, transimpedance amplifiers, limiting amplifiers, VCSEL drivers including multiple passives and comes from the wafer with the necessary alignment pin holes for direct connection to an MT style connector. All this fits into a package less than 1.0 cm square and 0.2 cm thick.
Technology Overview
- Fiber-Lyte's optical devices are passively aligned using conventional wafer lever assembly tools and techniques.
- It has an integrated connector with no need for alignment jigs.
- It supports MT-RJ and MPO.
- It packages both individual and / or arrayed Tx and Rx die.
- It has tight channel spacing of 0.75mm with additional channels adding only 0.25mm to total package size.
- It is optimally used in Datacomms applications up to distances of 500m.
- It is primarily deployed at 850nm with multi-mode fibre cores of 50µm or larger.
- It is optimally used with surface emission / detection devices.
Comparison: Fibre-Lyte Versus LC
Optical coupling between transmit / receive die and the fibres in MTP and MT-RJ connectors usually relies on a lens system. Fibre-Lyte can fit a large number of lenses in addition to alignment pin holes in a small space. LC needs one extra TO can per channel.
Fibre-Lyte uses a unique lens system integrated directly into the package which has shown an exceptional level of coupling efficiency. Scalability of the lens system has also been demonstrated with the successful manufacture of arrays as shown above right. The lens surfaces are smooth to the atomic level. Fiber-Lyte has integrated MT pin guide hioles that are accurate to within a couple of microns.
